Company history
From fabrication shop to HDPE innovation
Sweetwater Metal Products was founded in 1969 by Charles R. “Dick” Cleveland, a fabricator by trade. The company first produced chrome furniture, then grew into sheet-metal fabrication and began building boat trailers in 1975.
As the boat-trailer market changed in the 1990s, a new opportunity emerged. In early 1995, Bobby Bright, a salesman for Plexco Pipe, approached Dick with the need for a machine that could straighten coiled HDPE pipe. The first “line prepper” prototype was developed in the SMP shop and later became the McElroy LineTamer®.
Today, SMP’s complete trailer line is focused on the HDPE industry while continuing Dick Cleveland’s legacy of practical fabrication and problem-solving.
